THREE states to hold hearings on COS in ONE day

Published in Blog on February 05, 2024 by Jakob Fay

Last week, I predicted Convention of States would enjoy a “record-breaking February,” poised to surpass the already vibrant grassroots activism and advocacy witnessed in January. Already, that prediction seems to have come true: This week, at least three states will hold legislative hearings on the Convention of States’ Article V application — all scheduled for the same day!

Iowa, Ohio, and Rhode Island are all contenders for 20th place in our race to 34 states, the constitutional threshold needed to trigger an amendments convention. With active COS legislation in 16 states, committee hearings pending in 20 state legislative chambers, and a whopping 249 sponsors and cosponsors across the nation, the grassroots-backed Article V cause is positioned for explosive growth in the coming weeks and months.

One of the first steps in that process is to secure committee hearings for the Convention of States resolution. Bills that successfully navigate through the appropriate committees can subsequently be presented to the full Senate or House floor. Once both legislative bodies have favorably passed the application, that state officially joins the roster of those urging Congress to convene a convention.

Tomorrow, on Tuesday, February 5, the Hawkeye State will kick off the festivities with a hearing on Article V in the Iowa House State Government Committee, commencing at 9:00 a.m. ET. Following suit, two hours later, at 11:00 a.m. ET, the Buckeye State will take center stage with a hearing in the Ohio House Government Oversight Committee. Finally, the Ocean State will hold a public hearing on Article V in the Rhode Island House Committee on State Govt. and Elections, slated for 4:30 p.m. ET.

Convention of States fans nationwide are encouraged to tune in for this historic day, as our national team provides live coverage on COS LIVE, recently rebranded to focus on breaking legislative events.

Our incredible grassroots teams are making history — one state, one legislator, one petition signer at a time — and we need all the help we can get. To join us in this fight, sign the Convention of States petition below and get involved today.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
