There have been two distinct but interconnected efforts to drain The Swamp in D.C. over the last decade or so. The first came with the Tea Party in 2009. The second was the election and administration of Donald Trump.
Both were necessary and somewhat successful. The Tea Party elected liberty-loving candidates, and President Trump won some important policy victories and fought The Swamp with everything he had.
Unfortunately, as Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler explained in a recent Newsmax op-ed, neither movement succeeded in draining The Swamp and limiting the size and power of the federal government.
[During the Tea Party movement,] a newly elected army of fed-up citizens were sworn into Congress in 2010 with a promise to fix politics in D.C.
But there was a flaw in the plan—or, more accurately, a flaw in the candidates. We watched as one by one the majority of these citizen-legislators were swallowed up or spit out by The Swamp.
Then, in 2016 we tried again, and Trump was elected on the same promise.
He battled The Swamp and won some important policy and regulatory victories.
But unfortunately, when it came to government spending and debt, Trump showed the same proclivity to spend, with little thought for our fiscal future. But even that wasn’t enough to protect from the machinations of the Swamp, who not only drove him from town, but also rammed through an unconstitutional impeachment against him for good measure.
Mark helped found the largest Tea Party group in the United States, and he supported Donald Trump's reelection campaign. No one is more disappointed than he is about how those movements have been overrun by The Swamp, but he's not giving up.
As he further explained in his editorial, there's another way to drain The Swamp that doesn't rely on the courage or abilities of our politicians in D.C.
Now, we’re taking another run at draining The Swamp, but we’re not relying on anyone in Washington to do it for us. We’re using the power of the states and the Constitution to limit federal power, kick out career politicians, and get our nation’s finances under control.
An Article V Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can effectively and permanently drain The Swamp by restoring the balance of power between Washington, the states, and the people.
Amendments can, for example, limit the topics on which Congress can spend money. Right now, Congress can spend money on virtually anything, from education to energy to the environment. The awesome power of the federal purse allows them to dictate policy to state governments in return for bags of federal cash.
By eliminating the ability of Congress to spend money, we can limit the role of the federal government in domestic policy and reassert the power of the states and the people. As an added bonus, these amendments will force Congress to get our nation's finances under control, lower the debt, and eliminate the deficit.
It takes 34 states to call a Convention, and 15 are on board. To help make your state number 16, sign the petition below!
