“There’s Something About Your People”

Published in Blog on June 10, 2019 by Warren Wheeler

Culture is defined as the social behavior and norms found in any grouping of humans, from entire societies to small organizations, and on down to individual families.

Convention of States Action Co-Founder and President Mark Meckler recently reflected upon the culture of COS Action.

If you want to know why COS has made exceptional progress in 2019—and why it is a tough row to hoe—watch the first 10 minutes of the video. We hope it inspires you to do even more for COS Action.

Among Mark’s revealing anecdotes is a conversation he had with an Arkansas state senator. When he thanked her for her support in a recent vote, her response surprised him. He summarized her comments as follows:

You can't thank me, I have to thank you. I have to thank your people…I've been in this legislature for 12 sessions. I have never—never in 12 sessions—received a single thank you note. Your people sent me thank-you notes. I've just never seen anything like it. You have no idea what that means. Everybody yells at us. Everybody hates us. Everybody screams at us. Everybody complains to us, and even when we do something they like, they don't even pay attention; like we're just supposed to do what they like. There's something different about your people.

We thank you, our Virginia supporters and volunteers, for being “different.” We thank you for helping to grow our grassroots army by attracting more people who are different.

In 21 weeks, Virginia’s voters will elect a new General Assembly (GA)—100 lower house delegates and 40 senators. In about 14 weeks, absentee ballots will start being cast.

That’s not a lot of time, especially for an all-volunteer organization. Will you help us ensure candidates in your area have completed the COS Survey?

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
