American education with Ryan Walters

Published in Blog on August 27, 2024 by Matt May

Anyone who is concerned about the future of our republic has a vested interest in the form and function of public education in the United States.

Convention of States Action grassroots have lent significant support to legislation that safeguards and reinforces parental rights in various aspects of education in many states, notably in Tennessee

The September edition of "COS at Home" will feature a special guest who is heavily involved in public education policy and implementation at the state level. Ryan Walters, who currently serves as the Oklahoma State Superintendent of Public Instruction, will join the program.

"COS at Home” is hosted each month by COSA regional director and political liaison Jonathan Viaud. This month's episode will air on September 4, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET and can be livestreamed here

Jonathan will delve into various aspects of education and education policy with Superintendent Walters. He will also talk with Superintendent Walters -- a COS petition signer -- about his COS story and how he came to support the call for an Article V convention.

Superintendent Walters won election to his post in 2022 with 56.8 percent of the vote in the general election. His candidacy was endorsed by, among others, Oklahoma governor Kevin Stitt and U.S. senator Ted Cruz. Prior to his election, he had served as state Secretary of Public Education and worked as executive director of the education initiative Oklahoma Achieves.

Superintendent Walters is a native of McAlester, Oklahoma, and was educated at Harding University. He returned to to his hometown to teach Advanced Placement courses in world history, U.S. history, and U.S. government, in addition to special education courses and Advanced Via Individual Determination (AVID) classes at McAlester High School. In 2016, he was a finalist for the statewide Teacher of the Year Award.

Superintendent Walters and his wife, Katie, have four children.

In addition to Jonathan's conversation with Superintendent Walters, this edition of "COS at Home" will also feature timely updates about Convention of States Action's progress and presence across the country and interesting segments that spotlight the tireless and committed grassroots that make everything possible, all produced by the talented Garrett “Producer G” Humbertson.

We love to hear from you and want you to be a part of everything that we do, so please contribute to the program by submitting a question or comment for Superintendent Walters to our Minutemen Mailbag. Just head to the Minutemen Mailbag via this link

Be sure to pencil in time to watch Jonathan's important discussion about education with Superintendent Walters on September 4 at 8:00 p.m. ET

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
