Dallas Jewish Conservatives hosted a very dynamic event last week at Look Cinemas in Dallas. Newsmax TX host and Texas Scorecard's Chris Salcedo interviewed Mark Meckler, co-founder of the Convention of States project.
To a packed house, they covered how Article V has the solution for a federal government that has grown beyond the consent of the governed. Salcedo and Meckler's discussion was entertaining and informative.
Salcedo framed many of the ills of a federal government that is out of control, and way beyond the consent of "We The People". Meckler and Salcedo discussed how our founder's view of federalism has become inverted. The founders envision a federal government limited to specific enumerated powers, with the broad powers left to the states or the people. Instead, we have "progressed" to a point that now the scope and power of the federal government is unfettered, the states are a junior partner, and citizens are disenfranchised. Everyday brings new examples, from exceeding the $31 trillion debt limit, to eliminating gas stoves, and everything in between.
Meckler covered how the founders all anticipated this day, and put two methods to amend the constitution into article V of the constitution. One is dependent the federal house and senate proposing amendments to fix Washington. (Odds are between slim & none.) The second is in the hands of the states to petition for an Article V convention to propose amendments. It is this approach that holds promise for a true return to limited federal government:
- Term limits for federal officials
- Limits on federal spending
- Limits on the scope and reach of the federal government & agencies
The program was quite wide-ranging, and left a generous amount of time for Q&A with the audience. Meckler and Salcedo fielded questions from supporters and opponents equally.
It's recorded that after the 1787 convention, a lady asked Dr. Franklin, "Well Doctor what have we got, a republic or a monarchy?" "A republic," replied the Doctor, "if you can keep it."
Mark Meckler talked about the importance of moral citizens educated in the constitution. This is why Convention of States focuses on COS University, constitution classes, servant leadership, and prayer ministries.
We had Convention of States volunteers present from Dallas, Collin, Denton, Rockwall, and other counties across the state. We had a booth set up so that we could share COS Pocket Guides with the audience.
Here is the Salcedo Storm podcast produced from the event.
