Do you trust the states or Congress?
Convention of States opponents stoke fears around a runaway convention as a reason not to use Article V Section II as provided by the Founders. These concerns have been debunked over and over again, but what continues to run away and threaten our livelihoods is our runaway Congress.
The congressional chaos this past weekend is an appropriate reminder that our state leaders are much more competent and trustworthy. Congress averted a government shutdown by less than 12 hours, finalizing a temporary budget in the nick of time.
While representatives in D.C. worked on Saturday to come to an agreement, a Democratic representative pulled the fire alarm in an attempt to stall negotiations. He claimed it was an accident, but as a former school principal and with clear video footage, the justification remains doubtful.
"I am embarrassed to admit that I activated the fire alarm, mistakenly thinking it would open the door," the congressman claimed.
Meanwhile, conflicts within the GOP are growing more intense. Matt Gaetz has promised to bring a motion to vacate against Speaker Kevin McCarthy this week for not adhering to specific policy agendas. Gaetz and many other Republicans are against continued funding to Ukraine, while McCarthy wants to continue providing aid to the foreign nation.
"I do intend to file a motion to vacate against Speaker McCarthy this week. I think we need to rip off the Band-Aid. I think we need to move on with leadership that’s trustworthy," Gaetz said Sunday.
"Bring it," McCarthy responded.
The new government shutdown deadline is November 17, the Friday before Thanksgiving, which means the holiday is in jeopardy for members of Congress. If members want to go home for the break they will have to work out an agreement.
"Christmas will be just around the corner. Don’t be surprised if Congress punts a new deadline to that holiday in November," the Hill writes.
Whether it's funding, investigations, or legislation, productivity on behalf of the American people seems to always lag within Congress. The congressional train has been running away for a long time and the Capitol Hill chaos won't settle on its own. We must avert the runaway with Convention of States.
Let’s stop our runaway Congress in its tracks by calling an Article V convention. Please add your name to the COS petition below.
