When politicians and pundits talk about the national debt, they frequently jump to the economic ramifications of our ballooning, $27 trillion debt.
This is a fair critique. A large national debt can slow growth, reduce wages, and hinder our flexibility in responding to economic slowdowns (like, oh we don't know, a nationwide pandemic).
But there's also a moral component to Congress' irresponsible spending.
Whatever the consequences of the debt are, they'll be most keenly felt by our children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. The COVID-19 pandemic will shrink that timeline, but the true weight of the debt won't be felt by the generation currently serving in Congress.
Future generations will be left to bear the brunt of the burden. These men and women didn't make the terrible spending decisions that got us into this mess, but they'll be the ones who pay the price.
That's like someone going to prison for a crime they didn't commit. Or like a person going bankrupt after their possessions are stolen. Or, as the Founding generation put it, like "taxation without representation."
If someone is improperly punished for a crime, we call that injustice, and we work to correct it. The national debt should be no different. Our children and grandchildren don't deserve the future we're giving them, and we must do everything we can to correct this gross injustice.
That's why over 4.7 million people have voiced their support for an Article V Convention of States. A Convention of States is the only way to force Congress to deal with the national debt and get our fiscal house in order. Neither party has shown any willingness to get spending and debt under control -- Democrats increase spending, Republicans reduce taxes, but no one is willing to cut the useless, duplicative, and wasteful use of taxpayer money.
A Convention of States can force their hand. By proposing constitutional amendments that mandate a balanced budget without raising taxes, a Convention of States can compel our elected representatives to do right by our children and grandchildren.
If Congress won't act, We the People will, and a Convention of States is our most powerful tool. It takes 34 states to call a Convention under Article V, and 15 states are already on board. Sign the petition below to join the movement!
