The coming week promises to be a busy one for supporters of an Article V convention that will discuss and propose constitutional amendments to limit the size and scope of the federal government.
In addition to ongoing grassroots efforts in Idaho and Iowa, legislative committees in Missouri, Kansas, and Maryland will meet to examine and discuss bills that contain language for appointing commissioners to a convention once 34 state legislatures pass our resolution.
In Missouri, the state Senate Committee on Rules, Joint Rules, Resolutions and Ethics is scheduled to meet on February 27 at noon CST in the Senate Lounge to discuss SB 1310.
The legislation outlines the procedures by which the Missouri General Assembly would appoint commissioners to represent the state at an Article V convention of states. This includes the creation of a joint legislative committee for the submission of names of potential commissioners and issuing of instructions to commissioners.
Next door, the Kansas House Committee on Federal and State Affairs will convene a hearing to scrutinize HB 2807, a bill that similarly provides the parameters for the Sunflower State's representation at an Article V convention. The committee is scheduled to meet at 9:00 a.m. CST in Room 346-S in the Kansas legislative complex.
The Senate Committee on Education, Energy and the Environment in Maryland will hold a hearing about SB 1073. The bill requires the Maryland General Assembly to appoint a delegation from Maryland to an Article V convention, in addition to providing for the membership of that delegation, the creation of an advisory committee, and setting the operations of the group. The bill was cross-filed with HB 1202.
The hearing will begin at 9:00 a.m. EST in Room 2 of the West Miller Senate Building in Annapolis on March 1.
None of these bills and preparations would be possible without the amazing and inspiring work of the grassroots Convention of States volunteers and leaders who continue to contact and educate their legislators and gather support for an Article V convention.
