Today Convention of States supporters from across Virginia traveled hundreds of miles on short notice to attend the House Rules Committee to support HJ 49. We thank them for their service and sacrifice.
Our supporters more than doubled those of the opposition.
The committee focused on topics, such as designating Beer Day, while painstakingly recording the votes of each member.
The House Rules Committee started the proceedings for HJ49 before our chief patron arrived. Each side was only allowed one speaker to voice their support or opposition. However the House Rules Committee leadership expressed their reluctance to have any debate on the matter.
Del. Landes filed the motion to table the resolution until 2019, which was seconded by Del. Knight. A voice vote was taken. Del. Cox motioned to table HJ49. The motion carried.
This was not the outcome that was expected. Please contact the committee members of the House Rules Committee to express your disappointment in their lack of support for this needed resolution.
Friday at 8:00am, SJ 31 will come before the Senate Rules Committee. We need COS supporters to let the committee members know we want them to pass the resolution.
They need to hear from you, even Friday morning. When legislators receive phone calls from constituents on legislation being considered during committee, they take notice.
