Strange Bedfellows: BLM Protests Vaccine Mandates as Overreach, "Modern-Day Freedom Papers"

Published in Blog on September 28, 2021 by Article V Patriot

Americans on the Left and the Right don't agree on much, but in New York at least, they've found a point of common ground.

The New York Black Lives Matter chapter has spoken out against Mayor Bill de Blasio’s highly-debated vaccine mandates, calling the requirement racist and an "infringement of civil liberties."

The BLM movement typically sticks close to the narrative of the Left, but on the topic of COVID-19, it appears the organization is splitting with their counterparts. The co-founder of the BLM Greater New York chapter, Chivona Newsome, is speaking out against the government overreach, which she says is specifically targeting black residents.

"Although Mayor Bill De Blasio ran on progressives values, nothing in his tenure will attest to his campaign promises," Newsome said, according to Fox News. "The September 13th vaccine mandate is racist and specifically targets Black New Yorkers. The vaccination passports are modern day Freedom Papers, which limit the free will of Black people."

Vaccine requirements have slowly become a part of daily life in many parts of New York, with businesses and employers following guidelines from government officials. The Monday vaccination deadline for healthcare workers and public school employees forced many to choose between personal beliefs and careers.

"The vaccination mandates infringe upon the civil liberties of the Black community," Newsome explained. "It’s more than where we can dine or enjoy entertainment, it will result in loss of income. As of Monday, September 27, Black health care workers and educators will lose their jobs."

The chapter protested outside a restaurant on Monday where a black woman was denied entry as a result of vaccination enforcement.

While Newsome’s approach to the argument may differ from some conservatives, it displays a consensus between groups of people holding almost entirely different views. No matter the reasoning for why the government shouldn't have the ability to mandate a vaccine, all sides agree that the government's power should be limited.

That's especially true of the federal government.

Forced vaccinations could be a turning point for both Democrats and Republicans that see the threat of growing power within the government and lessening choice for individuals. President Joe Biden's latest vaccine mandate proves that he won't hesitate to impose New York-style policies on the entire country.

Fortunately, the Founders gave us a solution. Article V of the Constitution allows all citizens of every political affiliation to take back the power and prohibit government regulation in areas that it shouldn't be involved in--such as vaccination status.

Called and controlled by the states, a Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that limit federal power and build a permanent firewall against overreach from Washington. Tyrants like Biden won't stop at vaccine mandates. They'll use the COVID pandemic to mandate their entire socialist agenda, and we must call a Convention of States before that happens.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
