The next time you need a loan for a car or a house or a television, will you go ask your kids for a good interest rate? Or if you need a couple bucks to go to a movie, would you ask your grandchildren to reach into their wallets?
Of course not. But as Steve Riese explained recently to a Nebraska legislative committee, that's exactly what we're doing with our nation's finances.
"We've had enough of this immoral arrangement in which we borrow money from our children and grandchildren because we can't live within our means," he said.
"And what happens when we can no longer borrow from our children? Automatic spending cuts have to target the largest programs. What are they? Medicare, Medicaid, social security. Those on those programs are likely to find those programs significantly cut."
As Steve went on to explain, a Convention of States is the only way to force Congress to limit its own spending. A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments that force Congress to stop borrowing from future generations and live within our means.
Patriots like Steve are working in state legislatures all across the country to make a Convention of States a reality. Fifteen states have signed on, and we expect more to do so this legislative session.
