Social Security is floundering under the weight of a “record-breaking” backlog of payments, which may have cost the government over a billion dollars.
According to the Office of the Inspector General, the Social Security Administration is struggling to process payments to beneficiaries, with 5.2 million pending actions. Past data indicates over 70% of these cases have been pending for at least 300 days, with many extending beyond 500 days.
Although the exact causes are unclear, this unprecedented backlog has also led to the government issuing incorrect payments amounting to $1.1 billion. In either case, Americans who depend on Social Security are affected: they either face prolonged delays in receiving their benefits or, if overpayments are mistakenly made, they might be required to repay those funds at any time.
Complicating the matter, a new class-action lawsuit alleges that hackers may have stolen every American’s Social Security number, listing them for sale on the dark web. The federal lawsuit states that the shadowy criminal group “USDoD” has offered “the personal data of nearly 3 billion people living in the United States, United Kingdom and Canada” for $3.5 million. Although experts counter that many profiles are probably duplicates, the breach still represents a major threat to millions of Americans.
“[E]veryone with a Social Security number was impacted,” guessed Cliff Steinhauer, director of information security and engagement at The National Cybersecurity Alliance. “It's a reminder of the importance of protecting yourself, because clearly companies and the government aren't doing it for us,” he added.
The politicians and bureaucrats who run this country have failed us, endangering and bankrupting our nation in the process. Enough is enough. Through an Article V convention, we can take action to restore fiscal responsibility, sanity, and safety to our government.
Every day, we are pushing for an Article V convention. But at the end of the day, Washington, D.C., makes the best case for us. Clearly, if they cannot even manage their finances, they should not be trusted to manage our lives, either.
