The current occupant of the White House originally promised us a $2,000 relief payment per individual. He quickly backed down to only $1,400 per individual, giving credit to President Trump's last stimulus as "part of" this $2,000 relief payment.
The current relief bill package, as characterized by Brad Polumbo, is for $1.9 trillion. But wait: $1.9 trillion divided by 328 million citizens is a whopping $5,792 per person. Americans are getting $1,400 each, while the other $4,392 is going...where?
It is supposed to be for "coronavirus relief." Except that only 5% will go towards public health needs, and only 1% will be directly spent on vaccine management and distribution.
Though there are funds allocated towards reopening schools, much of it is allotted for 2022-2023, long after schools should be open. Another 15% is not even trying to be allocated toward coronavirus relief.
Worse yet, $1.9 trillion divided by the number of people in the tax base (143 million) is roughly $13,260. That means the cost each to taxpayer for this "benefit" approaches ten times the original return.
Imagine being the owner of a business. Would you allow someone to "buy" $200 worth of your product, then take another $20 out of the till and give it to you (you know, as a favor), when all along you knew they did not have the money to pay for it in the first place? What's worse, the I.O.U has your name on it, not theirs. They are not paying for it, you are.
We are going to pay 10 times over for this "stimulus." Is that a sound business practice? If you do not think so, then you can appreciate what the Convention of States is trying to accomplish for our benefit and that of our future generations.
Do not be afraid to contact your representative and either thank him or her for their support, or encourage him or her to hold the federal government accountable and limit their wasteful spending practices.
