Senate Republicans cave to Democrats (again), pass stopgap measure to fund government (again)

Published in Blog on December 06, 2021 by Article V Patriot

Republicans helped Democrats yet again last Thursday by voting for a continuing resolution that prevented a government shutdown from taking place.

The stopgap funding bill passed with the help of 19 Republican Senators, which avoided a partial shutdown by pushing back the spending resolution 10 weeks until mid-February.

A stopgap essentially allows politicians to get by with their unresolved problems and keep the funding flowing to government agencies. It lets Congress carry on without making hard decisions, something both parties have become good at recently.

This temporary solution for fiscal year 2022 appropriations was already pushed back once, meaning this is the second time Congress has decided to delay a final agreement on government spending.

GOP members had threatened to prevent the stopgap from passing so that Biden’s unconstitutional vaccine mandates would not be funded. However, Republicans ultimately catered to the left and allowed the government to keep functioning under extended government funding.

Just one Republican voted for the bill in the House, Rep Adam Kinzinger of Illinois, and House Democrats still managed to move the bill along. However, the likelihood of passing in the Senate was not as good with the evenly split chamber. That is, until 19 Republicans sided with the Dems to keep all federal agencies up and running.

The move is a disappointment for conservatives who feel that they can't trust the GOP to stick to their guns when the chips are on the table. The way that GOP members have continually helped liberals enact their leftist policies has proven that many Republicans are not on the people’s side.

Senate Republicans have repeatedly gone against their constituents to help Democrats pass extremely progressive bills in recent months, including the infrastructure bill. Without the help of these shifty Republicans in Congress, the bills would not have been able to pass.

Republicans like Senator Susan Collins, Lindsey Graham, Mitch McConnell, Lisa Murkowski and Rob Portman voted for the stopgap and helped Democrats. These same senators also helped pass the $1.2 trillion infrastructure bill.

It goes to show that many Republicans have no interest in conserving anything -- whether our money or our values. The Build Back Better bill still needs to go through the Senate, and will likely acquire support from these same "conservatives."

The people don’t want to put up with unreliable and untrustworthy leaders anymore. That's why millions have joined the Article V movement.

An Article V Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that would allow the states to regain power and impose restraints on the federal government. Term limits could be enacted so career politicians could be sent home from Washington for good. A balanced budget requirement could also be imposed so that the reckless spending could be prevented for future generations.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
