During a recent appearance on The National Desk, former United States Senator and Convention of States Senior Advisor Rick Santorum helped shed light on why he and thousands of Americans support the Article V movement to rein in the federal government.
“I spent 16 years in Congress [and] ran for president a couple of times,” said the Pennsylvania lawmaker. “It seemed increasingly clear to me that Washington was growing bigger and bigger, and more and more out of control, spending-wise.”
“I just didn’t see anybody in Washington, in either party, really doing anything about it,” he added. “They’re just sorta on autopilot.”
This frustration at the lack of progress in the nation’s capital inspired not only Sen. Santorum to join the Convention of States cause, but has led thousands of disillusioned voters into our ranks. With 19 states having already adopted the Convention of States resolution and North Carolina on the brink of passage, the senator explained that, at this point, “it’s really a matter of continuing to build momentum.”
“I think if you look at the situation in Washington and you look at the division and dysfunction there,” he said, “it really is time for us to have a discussion about what Washington should do and what Washington shouldn’t. And that’s what [an Article V convention] is.”
