Sen. Joe Manchin signals openness to weakening the filibuster, opening lane for Democratic agenda

Published in Blog on June 17, 2021 by Article V Patriot

One of the only things standing between the Democrats and their world-changing big-government agenda is moderate West Virginia Senator Joe Manchin. Sen. Manchin has maintained since the 2020 election that he has no plans to weaken the filibuster, which requires the Senate to obtain 60 votes before passing any legislation.

Now, after months of intense pressure from Democrats, it looks like Sen. Manchin might be weakening.

According to a bombshell new report from The Intercept, Sen. Manchin is open to lowering the filibuster threshold from 60 votes to only 55.

Asked about a proposal to lower the threshold to beat back a filibuster to 55 votes, he said that it was something he was considering, but then quickly referred back to his earlier idea of forcing the minority to show up on the Senate floor in large enough numbers to maintain a filibuster.

“That’s that’s one of many good, good suggestions I’ve had,” he said of lowering the cloture total from 60 to 55. Manchin went on to discuss the last time the cloture threshold was lowered, in the 1970s.

“I looked back … when it went from 67 votes to 60 votes, and also what was happening, what made them think that it needed to change. So I’m open to looking at it, I’m just not open to getting rid of the filibuster, that’s all,” he said.

It would be difficult for the Democrats to pass their agenda with 55 votes, but Sen. Manchin is clearly wavering. If he's willing to lower the threshold from 60 to 55, will he eventually succumb to the pressure and get rid of the filibuster entirely? Democrats have nearly 18 more months before the midterm elections, which is plenty of time force the West Virginia senator to bend to their will.

If the filibuster falls, Americans can expect each and every Democratic proposal to pass: gun bans, automatic voter registration, new Democrat-controlled states, abortion on demand, Medicare-for-all, an expanded nanny state, and massive bureaucratic overreach.

Wouldn't it be nice if the American people didn't have to rely on a single senator to protect their freedoms? Shouldn't We the People be free from the tyranny of the federal government without fear of a sudden transformation of our country?

The root of the problem isn't that Washington enacts bad policy -- it's that they have the power to enact that policy. If we want to end the threat of big-government tyranny, we can't rely on politicians like Manchin to hold strong. We must shrink the power, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government as a whole, and we can do it with a Convention of States.

A Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that answer each and every Democratic threat. Amendments can shore up Second Amendment protections, prohibit the federal government from meddling in elections, restrict the amount of money they can spend on healthcare and environmental policy, and eliminate many federal agencies.

With these amendments in place, the American people won't have to worry about what the federal government is doing because Washington won't have enough power to change our nation. Federal politicians will be securely confined to their constitutional box, and We the People can get back to focusing on our states and local communities.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
