With President Trump and Senate Republicans poised to appoint another conservative justice to the U.S. Supreme Court, the Democrats are threatening a radical restructuring of our system of governance.
Senator Chuck Schumer has already declared that "nothing is off the table" if the Republicans get their nominee appointed.
“If Leader McConnell and Senate Republicans move forward with this, then nothing is off the table for next year,” Schumer declared. “Nothing is off the table.”
It's clear what he means: he wants to pack the Supreme Court and add more progressive justices until his side has the majority.
Senator Ed Markey was more explicit.
"Mitch McConnell set the precedent. No Supreme Court vacancies filled in an election year. If he violates it, when Democrats control the Senate in the next Congress, we must abolish the filibuster and expand the Supreme Court," Markey said on Twitter.

Markey and Schumer are in such hysterics for one simple reason: they know the Supreme Court has the power to permanently change the shape of our country.
The Founders believed the court would be the least powerful branch of government. Contrary to their wishes, the Court has become one of the most powerful. With a single vote, the Court has dictated policy for all 50 states, rammed down rules that have the force of law, and usurped their limited role in our constitutional system of governance.
Schumer understands this, which is why he's looking to flip the script and regain control of the Supreme Court. If he's successful, each election will become more contentious than the last as Americans worry over which party will gain control of the Senate. If you think our politics are toxic now, just wait until control of the Court hangs in the balance every two years.
What if there was an alternative to endless political infighting in Washington? What if We the People had the power to limit the Court's power and shrink their role in daily American life?
Article V of the Constitution gives them that power.
Article V allows the states to call a Convention of States to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can effectively overturn the last 100 years of judicial activism, limit the power of the Supreme Court, and give the states real recourse to fight bad decisions of the future.
The Court should never have had this much power. With a Convention of States, we can ensure that future generations won't have to worry so much about which ideological side controls the highest court in the land.
