Say goodbye to that burger! Sanders proposes "meat tax" to combat climate change

Published in Blog on September 03, 2019 by Article V Patriot

The federal government dictates decisions for Americans on a daily basis. The feds govern everything from healthcare to education to transportation to housing to the environment.

If Bernie Sanders' proposal becomes a reality, you can add "hamburgers" to that list.

The Senator from Vermont recently advocated for a "meat tax" as a way to combat climate change. Raising cows is one of the primary drivers of global warming, he claims, so Americans should give the federal government more money every time they visit McDonald's (makes sense, right?).

Here's the full exchange between Sanders and a constituent, per the Daily Wire:

“As you probably know, animal agriculture is to blame for the majority of climate change and is the leading cause of deforestation, water and air pollution, and biodiversity loss. With that being known, what do you plan on doing to ensure that Americans limit their consumption of animal products?” a constituent asked Sanders at a campaign event in South Carolina. “Germany has imposed a meat tax in hopes of limiting this consumption,” she continued. “What are your plans to stop these large corporations from further usurping natural resources and polluting the planet?”

Sanders replied, “All I can say is if we believe, as I do and you do, that climate change is real then we are going to have to tackle it in every single area including agriculture, ok? And in fact, one of the things we want to do with our farmers out there is help them become more aggressive and able to help us combat climate change rather than contribute to it.”

“So we will certainly – you’re right,” he added. “We’ve got to look at agriculture, we’ve got to look at every cause of the crisis that we face.”

You might believe that consuming less meat is a crucial step in the fight against climate change. Lots of people do, and many have made decisions to change the types of products they consume.

But, as Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler frequently points out, what is decided is far less important than who decides.

If proposals like Sanders' become law, that decision-making power will be transferred from you and your family to the federal government. Congress and D.C. bureaucrats will have the power to raise or lower the taxes on meat, which will profoundly impact the diets of millions of Americans.

Our country wasn't built on the idea that the federal government should take care of us. It was built on the truth that the American people should be empowered to make their own decisions -- to govern themselves.

That's why we launched the Convention of States Project, and that's why millions of Americans have jumped on board.

An Article V Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government. These amendments can expressly prohibit the feds from spending money or collecting taxes for anything not expressly mentioned in the Constitution.

With this complete package of amendments in place, the American people will once again be free to make their own decisions and do what they believe is best for their nation and the environment.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
