Rick Santorum: The Evolution of Power in Washington DC Forced me to Look at COS Seriously

Published in Blog on March 14, 2024 by Laurie Wheeler

The Convention of States Virginia Rally Day in Richmond, on January 9, featured headline speaker Rick Santorum, former US Representative in Washington DC from 1991 to 1995.

He fought corruption then, and he's fighting corruption now as Senior Advisor for Convention of States.

As a former beltway insider, Santorum has kept his eye on the growing power in Washington.

Here are a few soundbites from his speech to the COS supporters at the rally:

"We no longer have one party that wants to destroy the Constitution...I've always believed that conservatives believed in the Constitution and would fight to uphold the Constitution. I don't believe that anymore."

"The fiscal situation of the government is the power of the government. The more money the government has the more power they have over you. Secondly they are much more comfortable with abusing the power of the federal government."

Santorum hears all the time, "The left does it, we need to do it if we are ever going to beat them. In other words, we have to abuse power just like they do, otherwise they are going to beat us."

"The question is, what do we win, because we've lost what we're fighting for which is a country governed by the rule of law..."

Read more about Santorum's visit with the Virginia team, and how the COS legislation moved through the General Assembly.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
