Here's a question sure to stump big-government proponents: name one federal program that has been efficient, responsible, and effective.
Some federal programs are effective, but they've wasted billions of taxpayer dollars in the process. Others waste fewer dollars, but they're usually scrapped within the first few years.
Here's the simple truth: Washington, D.C., can't provide our needs, and that includes our children's education.
A new report from the Heritage Foundation has found that President Lyndon B. Johnson’s "Great Society" unleashed an army of bureaucrats but "produced little or no improvements to public education in 54 years."
The federal Head Start program, which was started in 1965 as a part of LBJ's initiative, has "utterly failed" in its mission, according to Lindsey Burke, director of Heritage’s Center for Education Policy.
“We have spent $240 billion on Head Start since it was launched as a small summer program in 1965,” Burke said during a panel discussion about the report. “We have seen no impact on parenting practices, children’s social and emotional wellbeing, their access to medical care, nothing. What we have today, that legacy, is a $9 billion federal jobs program, to be honest. Head Start employs 255,000 adults.”
What's more, "we have seen federal education spending quadruple, and yet that achievement gap remains [the same] between poor children and the more affluent kids today, a four-year gap in learning. We have not moved the needle at all,” Burke said.
The federal government has no business invading the lives of children and families, especially in regards to something as important as education. But that hasn't stopped Washington from trying -- and failing -- to improve numerous other social ills.
If we want to move our country in the right direction, towards freedom and prosperity, we have to get D.C. out of our daily lives. Federal politicians will never willingly give up their power, which is why we must call the first-ever Article V Convention of States.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments, once ratified by 38 states, will be able to reduce the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government. They can prohibit the feds from getting involved in issues like education, and free the people and the states to pursue the strategies that make the most sense for their families and communities.
Our children can't afford the federal government wasting more of their money. The $22 trillion national debt is coming due, and we owe it to them to leave our country better than when we found it.
