It's no secret that freshman New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez doesn't like the United States of America. In March she called her home country "garbage" and in June she claimed the Trump administration was operating "concentration camps" on the southern border.
But some of her attacks from hyperbole to downright, factual lies. Speaking at a rally for Senator Bernie Sanders, Ocasio-Cortez claimed last year that the United States is "fascist" and "not an advanced society."
“So we need to fight to start this work, an establishment of an advanced society,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “Because as much as much as we like to say that the United States is the richest country in the history, or rather in modern history, for who? The richest country, who cares about how much gold is being amassed if we can’t realize an advanced society with those resources?”
“And we’re here to say that what we’re living in right now is not an advanced society,” Ocasio-Cortez falsely claimed. “It is fascism! What we have, what we’re evolving into as well.”.@AOC on Bernie’s rally in LA yesterday: “It is fascism what we have” in the United States, “what we’re evolving into.” pic.twitter.com/M6pjhneTxm

However you define "advanced society," the United States surely makes the top of the list. In terms of military strength, no nation comes close. In terms of innovation, the United States ranks among the top three nations in the world. We're leading the globe not only in total wealth but also in wealth growth. In other words, we're not only rich but getting richer.
By whatever metric you choose to use, the United States is among the most advanced societies in the history of the world.
Nothing will stop politicians like Ocasio-Cortez from spreading lies to spread fear in her (small) base of supporters, but we must ask the question: why do we allow Ocasio-Cortez and her colleagues in Congress to amass power?
She and others hope to change the face of our country using Congress' broad authority to legislate on virtually any issue. From healthcare to education to the environment, the federal government can wrest control of anything from the states and the people.
It wasn't supposed to be this way. The Founders didn't want to empower dishonest politicians at the expense of We the People. They didn't want the national Congress to have the ability to radically change the country, but that's exactly the situation we find ourselves in today.
Fortunately, the Founders predicted this might happen. They knew that demagogues would rise up to expand federal power and trick Americans into thinking they needed help from D.C. That's why they included the Convention of States option in Article V of the Constitution.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments can shrink federal power by clarifying the limited role of Washington in domestic affairs. They can prohibit the feds from legislating or spending money on any issue not expressly mentioned in the Constitution. If the Constitution doesn't mention healthcare, for example, Congress can't pass a law restricting or regulating it.
We can't stop politicians from lying about our great country. But we can limit their power, and the best way to do that is with a Convention of States.
