Author, scholar, actor(!), Georgetown University professor of law, director of the Georgetown Center for the Constitution, and longtime COS endorser Randy E. Barnett will be the featured guest on the August edition of "COS at Home".
August indeed!
“COS at Home” is hosted each month by Convention of States Action (COSA) regional director and political liaison Jonathan Viaud. This month's episode will air on August 7, 2024, at 8:00 p.m. ET and can be livestreamed here.
Professor Barnett is one of the most learned constitutional scholars in the United States. Educated at Northwestern University and Harvard Law School, he served as a prosecutor in the Cook County States' Attorney's Office in Chicago, Illinois.
He has authored over 100 articles, reviews, and editorials about the law and the Constitution.
His latest book, A Life for Liberty: The Making of an American Originalist, was just released on July 2, and Jonathan will discuss the book and the concept of originalism with Professor Barnett.
Professor Barnett has also written the fascinating Our Republican Constitution: Securing the Liberty and Sovereignty of We the People. His textbook Constitutional Law: Cases in Context examines the first principles of the Constitution and the development of constitutional law in the United States.
He has been welcomed as a visiting professor at the law schools of the University of Pennsylvania, Northwestern, and Harvard.
As if all that weren't enough, Professor Barnett is also a thespian, having appeared in the science-fiction film InAlienable, in which he played a prosecuting attorney.
While the good professor's endorsement and enthusiasm for COS has been longstanding, he was initially skeptical and had reservations about the idea. But as he explains in the following clip, he was soon convinced by COSA co-founders Mark Meckler and Michael Farris that the limited-purpose focus of our Article V application has the correct scope, makes perfect sense, and is well worth supporting:
Professor Barnett was also very favorably impressed during his attendance at a simulated Article V convention and was again struck by the seriousness of purpose and effectiveness of the endeavor.
As evidenced by his writings and lectures, Professor Barnett's knowledge of the Constitution is wide and deep, and he has provided his students and the public access to all of the materials anyone could ever wish to have concerning the founding document of our government structure.
His Georgetown Center for the Constitution’s website is a treasure trove of information and legal scholarship, particularly its interactive “Originalist’s Constitution”, a database that grants access to over 1,500 essays, law review articles, and other materials that examine the original intent and meaning of each aspect of the United States Constitution.
In addition to Jonathan's conversation with Professor Barnett, this edition of "COS at Home" will also feature timely updates about Convention of States Action's progress across the country and interesting segments that spotlight the tireless and committed grassroots that make everything possible, all produced by the talented Garrett “Producer G” Humbertson.
You can make "COS at Home" interactive by participating in the Minutemen Mailbag segment. Questions that may be read and answered on the program can be sent to the Minutemen Mailbag via this link.
Do not miss Jonathan’s substantive and enlightening discussion with the accomplished and dynamic Professor Randy E. Barnett on August 7 at 8:00 p.m. ET right here!
