A new poll from Convention of States Action and the Trafalgar Group confirms what many Americans feel today: our country's future looks bleak.
According to the poll, nearly 53% of all Americans are either "not very optimistic" or "not optimistic at all" about the future of our country. "Not optimistic at all" was the most common of the five answers to the survey question, "How optimistic are you about the future of America?"
Sixty-five percent of Republicans and 63% of Independents are not optimistic, while 35% of Democrats feel the same way.
“Americans are optimistic people. When both Republicans and Independents are tracking almost identically in registering a lack of optimism about our future—and a sizable group of Democrats feel the same way—there is a serious problem. From Afghanistan to COVID-19 to inflation to foreign policy to basic things like education, Washington, DC, is failing to solve challenges, and the people are losing hope,” said Mark Meckler, President of Convention of States Action. “Our founders did not design a system in which Washington is the answer. State and local governments are solving our problems, and these numbers demonstrate yet again that voters believe the best solutions are close to home.”
Mark is right. Washington is the reason for Americans' pessimism. If we're looking to the federal government to solve our nation's problems, we're going to come away depressed and anxious. Washington has shown itself incapable of responding to our nation's most pressing problems, and our "leaders" in D.C. don't seem to listen or care what We the People think.
But here's the good news: Washington isn't meant to solve our problems. In the federalist system our Founders instituted, the states and the people are in control because the states and the people are the true seats of self-governance.
If we look to the states, there's reason to hope. Fifteen states have called for an Article V Convention of States to propose constitutional amendments that limit federal power and jurisdiction. Amendments can also be proposed that will force Congress to be fiscally responsible and limit the terms of office for career politicians like Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, Mitch McConnell, and Joe Biden.
Five million Americans have voiced support for the Founders' solution to federal overreach. Will you join them?
