Pelosi "unlikely" to call House back to address Afghanistan crisis

Published in Blog on August 27, 2021 by Article V Patriot

With the Biden administration teetering on the brink of collapse, Americans might expect their representatives in the U.S. Congress to step in and address the deadly crisis in Afghanistan.

Those Americans are likely to be disappointed.

Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi has made no indication that she plans to call her colleagues back to Washington from their vacation. Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy demanded that she bring lawmakers back to Washington to fix the Afghanistan debacle, but so far Pelosi has ignored his request.

"It is time for Congress to act quickly to save lives. Speaker Pelosi must bring Congress back into session before August 31 so that we can be briefed thoroughly and comprehensively by the Biden Administration and pass Representative Gallagher's legislation prohibiting the withdrawal of our troops until every American is out of Afghanistan," McCarthy said in a statement.

Americans are united on this issue. Democrats and Republicans alike have condemned the President's handling of the situation that has directly resulted in the deaths of 13 American soldiers. And yet, Rep. Pelosi is refusing to do her duty and advocate for the will of the American people.

Not only that, but she's prohibiting all other representatives from doing the same. A single lawmaker is standing between millions of Americans and their elected representatives, and unless she relents, those millions of Americans have no voice.

She's unlikely to relent. The situation in Afghanistan is a disaster for the Democrats, and she'll do everything in her power to downplay the situation. Calling members back to Washington would make Biden look bad, and that--more than American deaths or the American people--is what Pelosi fears.

Career swamp monsters have no place in Washington. Pelosi has long ago lost sight of her proper role in our system of government, and it's time for her to go.

That's why we need to call an Article V Convention of States. Pelosi is in a firmly Democratic district, and she's unlikely to retire. She'll also never vote to place term limits on members of Congress. Fortunately, a Convention of States can do it for her.

A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments that limit federal power and spending, and kick career politicians out of office by imposing strict term limits. Term limits would end the scourge of career politicians and move us one step closer to a Congress that actually works to represent We the People.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
