Democratic speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi's meltdown on CNN yesterday made headlines because she accused Wolf Blitzer of right-wing bias. That idea is laughable, but she said something else during that interview that should make the American people angry.
Blitzer was asking Pelosi why she is fighting a $1.8 trillion proposal by the White House to provide additional aid during the COVID-19 crisis. For most of the interview, she refused to answer the question. But in one moment, she revealed her true motivations.
"I want this very much now,” Pelosi claimed, speaking about more COVID-19 aid. “Because people need help now. It’s no use giving them a false thing just because the president wants to put a check with his name on it in the mail."
Pelosi, in other words, admitted that she's not supporting an aid package for the simple reason that it would give President Trump a win before the election.
Of course, Americans can disagree about whether spending more taxpayer money is appropriate when the country is $26 trillion in debt. But that isn't Pelosi's reason. Her reason is simple: she doesn't want to help President Trump even if it means potentially hurting the American people. This is the definition of putting politics over people.
Our elected officials need a wakeup call. We don't serve them, and we don't send them our money to play their political games. They serve us, and it's high time they be reminded of that.
That's why millions of Americans have joined the Convention of States Project. A Convention of States is the best way to limit the power, scope, and jurisdiction of politicians like Pelosi, who use that power to serve their own ends. A Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that restore the balance of power between the federal government and We the People. These amendments can remind our representatives who they work for, and ensure that they always put our needs ahead of their own.
