Over the (Capitol) Hill? Nonsense!

Published in Blog on February 20, 2025 by Jakob Fay

Today, February 20, marks Mitch McConnell’s 83rd birthday, and Americans on both sides of the aisle want to know whether the former Republican Senate Majority Leader has passed his prime — or, more aptly, whether he’s over the (Capitol) Hill. They have even begun to discuss the possibility of term-limiting the seven-term Senator from Kentucky!

But as for me, I really have no idea what they’re talking about.

Sure, McConnell was born in 1942, the same year the United States won the Battle of Midway, Bob Hope hosted the 14th Academy Awards, the St. Louis Cardinals won their 4th World Series, Walt Disney released Bambi, Casablanca debuted in New York City, and Muhammad Ali, Aretha Franklin, and Stephen Hawking were born.

And sure, he was elected in 1984, the same year President Ronald Reagan won his second term as president, the Soviet Union boycotted the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, The Terminator premiered, and Michael Jordan made his NBA debut.

And sure, he was first elected as Senate Republican Leader in 2007, the same year Steve Jobs announced the iPhone, Bob Barker hosted his final episode of The Price is Right, the subprime mortgage crisis began, and Barrack Obama announced his candidacy for president.

And sure, he has been known to freeze up from time to time.

Like this:

And this:

And sure, he has been falling a lot lately…

Forcing his staffers to wheel him around…

Other than that, I really can’t imagine why anyone would want to term limit Mitch McConnell.

Happy birthday, sir! May your day be filled with fond memories of the late 1940s, when you were young, Harry S. Truman was president, and the government had a budget surplus.

PS: McConnell announced on his birthday he won't seek reelection in 2026. To deliver the senator a well-deserved gift for his many years of service, sign the COS petition below.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
