I am respectfully asking you to support the Convention of States resolutions sitting before you in the General Assembly: HJ 457 and SJ 235.
The majority of American citizens know that this country is in dire need of reform.
We need leaders who not only recognize the problems, but have effective plans to fix them.
Unfortunately, our present group of elected leaders in Washington DC are not up to the job.
They have no interest in fixing the problems that they have caused.
Additionally, the nation is mostly being run by bureaucrats acting as an “un-elected” fourth branch of government.
The DC ‘swamp’ has demonstrated time and time again that it cannot and will not fix itself.
Real reform has to come from ‘We the People’ as expressed through our individual state or commonwealth legislators.
In other words, we need you!
The framers of our Constitution were wise enough to foresee what could happen if our federal government ever became too big and tyrannical.
So they provided us with a constitutional solution (proposed by Virginia’s own George Mason) that included a clause in Article V allowing two-thirds of the state legislatures to petition Congress to call a Convention of States.
Such a convention can provide amendments to the constitution addressing the specific problems of the day or into the future as needed.
This solution is obviously authorized, as it was clearly included by the framers in our Article V.
This is a peaceful and legal remedy.
There are only three specific topics into which each and every proposed amendment must fit.
It will take 34 states to agree on the same application in order to get Congress to call the convention.
Any proposed amendment must be ratified by 38 states.
I am hoping you have the courage to see this resolution as the correct path to solving the major problems happening today in our nation.
I pray that you will faithfully represent those of us who want to see a restoration of the guiding principles found in our Constitution.
Thank you for your service to Virginia.
