The presidential election is coming down to just a handful of states, and we may not know for days what the final vote count will be. Even then, both campaigns have vowed litigation if the outcome doesn't swing their way, so our country may be in for a long, grueling few weeks.
At times like these, it's important to keep in mind that no matter who wins the election, We the People will still have a fight on our hands. The deep state isn't going anywhere. Executive, legislative, and judicial overreach isn't going anywhere. The federal government is too big, too powerful, and has too much control over our daily lives.
That may not sound encouraging, but here's the truth: we may not be able to change the outcome of the election, but we can limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.
Under Article V of the Constitution, the people and the states can call a Convention of States for the purpose of proposing constitutional amendments. These amendments can limit federal power, restrict federal spending, and impose term limits on federal officials.
Limitations on federal power might include amendments that shrink federal jurisdiction so that Congress can no longer take control of healthcare, energy, or education. Term limits may include limiting members of Congress to only a few terms or forcing more turnover among the bureaucratic class. Restrictions on federal spending may include a balanced budget amendment along with spending limits and tax caps.
It takes 34 states to call such a Convention, and 15 have already done so. This year, we plan on introducing the Convention of States Resolution in dozens of additional states and appealing to those legislators and citizens who are fed up with Washington's overreach.
This election is important, but it won't address our country's deepest problems. Only a Convention of States can do that, and the Convention of States Project is the only nationwide grassroots movement working in all 50 states to call one.
