New Virginia Poll: Citizens are tired of the heavy hand of the federal government

Published in Blog on May 30, 2019 by Article V Patriot

Trafalgar Group recently conducted a statewide poll of 935 likely Virginia voters, measuring support for President Trump and Congressional job approval, the Second Amendment, upcoming Virginia General Assembly Election, and the Convention of States. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents were part of this survey.

Constitutional Amendments to Limit Federal Power: Almost two-thirds of likely 2020 Virginia voters—61%--favor the state calling for an Article V convention to propose constitutional amendments that limit federal spending, limit federal power, and establish term limits for Congress and/or federal judges.

Majorities of all three voting blocs support such a Convention of States, including 70% of likely Republican voters, 57% of likely Democrat voters, and 53% of Other likely voters.

Commenting on the survey, Mark Meckler, President of Convention of States Action said, “The obstinance by career politicians in Washington, D.C. to even consider tackling America’s pressing issues such as budget, debt and waste presents an opportunity for the States to step in. Virginia voters from all parties see clearly that the only way to fix the federal government is for the people, working with their state legislatures to get it done.”

Trump Approval: Trump’s job performance approval stands at 45% approval, while 54% disapprove and just 1% have no opinion. Disapproval and Approval were the most concentrated, with 38.6% “strongly” disapproving and 35% “strongly” approving.

Congressional Approval: Congress received low marks from Virginia voters with 19% approval, 71% disapproval, and just 10% having no opinion. Disapproval was much more intense, with 37.5% “strongly” disapproving and just 3% “strongly” approving.

General Assembly Election: If the General Assembly Election were held today, Republicans hold a slight advantage with 32% versus Democrats with 27%. Just 7% of Virginia voters have no opinion. There was no disapproval or approval in this category.

2nd Amendment Opinion: More than one-third of voters agree that Virginia should allow responsible, law-abiding citizens to own most types of guns with 37% approval, while 27% support background checks on all buyers. Just 2% had no opinion.

Methodology: A total of 935 interviews were conducted April 23-26, 2019, among a representative sample of likely 2020 General Election voters statewide in Virginia. The potential sampling error is plus or minus 2.76 at the 95% confidence level.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
