Nebraska is only one vote away from becoming the 17th state to officially pass the Convention of States Resolution and put us halfway towards the 34-state threshold prescribed by Article V.
Our amazing legislative sponsors have had to overcome numerous hurdles to get to this point. The Resolution was nearly dead last year until the "Miracle in Nebraska" put us back on the Senate floor. Our opponents have tried to filibuster the Resolution, and most recently, they tried to insert a "poison pill" amendment.
This amendment was proposed by Democrats and would have explicitly "protected" Second Amendment rights at a Convention of States. Why would two Democrats insert language in favor of gun rights? Their aim was to fearmonger about a Convention of States by pretending to be concerned about what a Convention of States could do to the Second Amendment.
Nebraska Sen. Steve Halloran wasn't having it. He immediately stood up and called out these deceptive legislators for their hypocrisy, and the amendments were rejected by huge majorities.
A Convention of States can't do anything to the Second Amendment, of course. A Convention can only propose amendments. Thirty-eight states must ratify any amendment proposals after the Convention, and we can easily think of 13 states that would never go along with any limitation of gun rights.
But they'll never even have to make that decision. Under our Resolution, only amendments that limit federal power can be considered. No amendments are allowed to be proposed that limit gun rights or any other right enshrined in the Constitution.
Our opponents are getting desperate. They're resorting to cheap tricks and diversions to block the Convention of States movement, but they'll ultimately fail. Wisconsin passed the Convention of States Resolution this week, and Nebraska looks to be hot on their heels. When they do, we'll be halfway to the 34-state threshold that triggers the first-ever Article V Convention of States.
