Convention of States volunteers in Milton, Florida, held their first meeting in the Florida Panhandle on Thursday, April 22. Up to 60 enthusiastic people attended the event at Grover T’s BBQ to learn more about the Convention of States Project.
The meeting was organized by volunteers extraordinaire Denise Becham and Sam Mullins. Before the meeting started there were some interesting conversations with several of the attendees. Gary and Judy Lancaster of Jay, Florida, signed the petition in 2016, and they echo the sentiments of the COS Project. It is the only solution!
Carl Hudgens meets with friends every Thursday for “Constitutional Coffee,” where he came to find out more about Convention of States.
His feeling was that an Article V convention is necessary to pass an amendment that would prohibit the expansion of the Supreme Court. He believes this to be the most fundamental issue when drafting an amendment at the convention.
Jordan Karr (COS Florida District Captain, for Pensacola/Milton) introduced Lynette Meisen (Regional Captain for House Districts 1-10) and Dave Zimmerman (District Captain for Milton), who attended to support the effort.Lynette told us there are thousands of petitions signed in each House District within the Panhandle. Dave correctly suggested that legislators respond to mass numbers, and that is one of the most important initiatives of Convention of States volunteers–to explain COS and invite people to sign the petition.
When private conversations led to the topic of chaos in Washington, D.C., there was a feeling of hopelessness and despair. But as Jordan began to speak and they watched videos from the COS website, people sat up and listened. A sense of hopefulness started to emerge.
Jordan looked at the group and told them, “Article V of the Constitution is a great opportunity to do something. The people have been asleep at the wheel but they are waking up. Now is the time to get busy."
As with any meeting where a new concept is introduced there were questions and concerns. Jordan and COS volunteers shared their experiences, and one answer emerged to the questions and concerns: Article V of the Constitution.
Milton's message is one for all of us:
share the petition, click the Volunteer button, and get involved. Share the solution with others and stay informed.
