Should politics trump human decency in federal elections? According to Bill Maher, the answer is "yes."
Comedian and multimillionaire Bill Maher doesn't care about the middle and lower income Americans who would lose their jobs in a recession. He hates President Trump, and, as one of his guests said on a recent episode of his show, the "short-term pain" of a recession is worth a Democratic win in 2020.
"We have survived many recessions. We can’t survive another Donald Trump term," Maher said during a panel discussion on Friday's episode of Real Time.
"You should wish for a recession,” Maher said. “'Cause that will definitely get him unelected."
"But Bill, you don’t really want a recession," guest Anthony Scaramucci, former White House communications director for Trump, said.
"I really do," Maher stated firmly.
Maher may be secure in his millions, but most Americans aren't so fortunate. Another recession could jeopardize the futures of millions of hardworking citizens, and wishing for a recession that Maher won't feel is the epitome of elitism and callousness.
Unfortunately, Maher articulates the elitist attitude and politics-above-all priorities shared by many of our "leaders" in D.C.
Congress has mortgaged the futures of our children and grandchildren in order to score the next political victory, increasing the deficit and debt to far beyond what our country can sustain over the long-term. They've taken over state budgets in order to help their favorite lobbies and they've stayed in D.C. year after year after year in order to increase the power, wealth, and influence.
None of these actions help the hardworking Americans who would be most harmed by a recession, so, in one way at least, Congress and Maher have much in common.
It's time to remind the "elites" in D.C. who they work for. An Article V Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government and effectively ban career politicians. These amendments can put Washington back in its constitutional box and force them to focus on the good of We the People rather than the next election.
