Marine veteran: "I didn't serve 20 years in the military to defend a federal leviathan"

Published in Blog on August 18, 2021 by Article V Patriot

In light of the tragic and maddening situation in Afghanistan, we're highlighting the bravery and sacrifice of our veterans.

After returning home, thousands of these patriots have joined the Convention of States teams in their states, where they've played crucial roles in passing the Convention of States resolution.

One of them, William Baker, delivered powerful testimony in Texas, where our Resolution passed in 2017.

Baker echoed the sentiment of many veterans, especially today. He didn't serve 20 years in the Marine Corps to protect and defend the Deep State or the hordes of politicians and bureaucrats in D.C. He fought to protect and defend the Constitution, his fellow service members, and the freedoms Americans hold dear.

"We are beset by a federal executive, which has all but abdicated its power to the judiciary, where policies known to be unconstitutional are put in motion in violation of the very oaths they swore to uphold," he said. "I didn't spend 20 years serving our country in the United States Marine Corps to live under that yoke."

"Governments are instituted amongst men for the sole purpose of preserving the liberties of the governed," he told the committee. "It is for this reason that I'm willing to stand shoulder to shoulder with all of you as you fight to use the Constitution to save the Constitution."

I pledge to uphold and defend the U.S. Constitution in its entirety--including its grant of power to the people, through their state legislatures, to use Article V to protect our nation from an abusive, overreaching federal government—and I pledge to educate my friends, family members, and neighbors about the importance of using this constitutional tool to protect our liberty.

COS Petition:

Dear Legislator, Our federal government is on a dangerous course. I believe it's time for real solutions. Please support calling a Convention of States to place fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials.

“Thank goodness the founders had the wisdom to provide us with Article V of the Constitution, which gives us the right and power to hold and Amending Convention for the purpose of proposing amendments to restrain the scope and power of the federal government... Under the system of federalism, I support the efforts to gather a constitutional Convention of States consistent with Article V and honoring the 10th Amendment.”    Allen West Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) Former U.S. Congressman, Texas
  • Brian Birdwell
“For years, too many in our deeply-entrenched federal government have willfully ignored the citizens they represent, essentially dissolving the Founders’ originally-intended balance of power and the primary role played by the states as sovereign entities in our national structure. My fellow veterans and I know firsthand the critical importance of a command and authority structure, which is why Washington’s refusal to uphold the Constitution compels the individual states to exercise their collective power through Article V.”    Brian Birdwell Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Ret.) Texas State Senator
  • Paul Vallely
“[O]ur nation is undergoing a period of great turmoil, and our federal government, Republicans and Democrats alike, has proven itself to be incapable of solving many of our national problems. The Washington, DC, political establishment has greatly overstepped its Constitutional boundaries in so many respects---it is truly time for the state governments to take action and return the federal government to its limited powers specified in our Constitution! I want to highlight to you that our nation is currently in a domestic war which we as veterans cannot afford to stand by and watch. We need to help win this war for the benefit of not only ourselves but also our posterity.”    Paul Vallely Major General, U.S. Army (Ret.) Author, lecturer, and counter-terrorism expert
  • Bill Cowan
“The federal government today has grown completely out of control, far beyond the fence of limited government intended by our nation's founders. The enormity of the federal government and the imbalance of power between the states and the federal government present a threat to our national security. The founders gave us a lawful and orderly process in Article V for the states to exercise the most powerful check on runaway federal power. For this reason, I support the Convention of States Project efforts to call an Article V convention to propose amendments that will limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government.”    Bill Cowan Lt. Colonel, USMC (Ret.) Fox News Contributor
  • Pete Hegseth
“The leviathan of today's federal government continues to grow unabated, pushing the people further away from our Founders' vision of self-governance. The Convention of States Project is the only constitutional pathway for citizens to save our Republic by restoring it to her citizens. Article V of our Constitution underscores the duty of active citizenship and I am proud to stand with millions of volunteers in this effort.”    Pete Hegseth Major, US Army Former CEO of Vets for Freedom and Concerned Veterans of America
  • Paul Gardner
“As United States military veterans, each of us took a lifelong oath to ‘support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic,’ and to ‘bear true faith and allegiance to the same.’ Today, the greatest threat to our Constitution is a highly-centralized federal government that regularly exceeds the limitations of its specifically enumerated constitutional powers, thereby invading the jurisdiction of the states, infringing upon the people’s liberty, and threatening our country with financial disaster. Washington, D.C. requires major, meaningful reforms. These reforms will only come from the outside, i.e., outside of Congress and the political establishment in Washington. This is why the Convention of States Project is essential to the survival of our constitutional republic. ”    Paul Gardner LTC, USAR (Ret.)
