LANSING, MI, October 8 – Trafalgar Group research firm conducted two polls, one in Congressional District 8 (CD-8) and one in Congressional District 11 (CD-11) both September 18-20th, 2018, measuring support for the close Congressional races in each district, job approval for President Trump and Congress, and support for the Convention of States. Republicans, Democrats and Independents were part of this survey. All respondents were registered to vote.
Constitutional Amendments to Restrain Washington: It is apparent that gridlock in Washington, D.C. is causing voters to seek other ways of limiting federal power. CD-8 results show 57% favor/24% oppose and CD-11 shows 52% favor/26% oppose the state calling for an Article V convention to propose constitutional amendments that limit federal spending, limit federal power, and establish term limits for Congress and/or federal judges. In the 18-35 age range 52% strongly favor passing the legislation in Michigan.
2018 Michigan Congressional Races: The CD-8 congressional race is a virtual tie with Republican Mike Bishop showing a narrow lead (45.2%) over Democrat Elissa Slotkin (44.5%). However, CD-11 congressional race shows Democrat Haley Stevens with a (44.6%) lead over Republican Lena Epstein (37.9%).
In CD-8, intensity spikes to 86% among voters who approve of the job President Trump is doing with voting for GOP candidate Mike Bishop, while 86% of voters who strongly disapprove of President Trump support Democrat candidate Elissa Slotkin. CD-11 race shows that 79% of voters who approve of the job President Trump is doing would vote for GOP candidate Lena Epstein, while those who strongly disapprove of the President 89% support Democrat candidate Haley Stevens (D).
Trump and Congress Job Approval: President Trump’s job approval for both districts remains positive with CD-8 voters’ approval at 51% versus disapproval at 46%. CD-11 voters’ approval remains positive at 48% with disapproval at 45%.
Congress generates a widely negative rating today – fully 70% disapprove and 21% approve in CD-8, while 72% disapprove and 19% approve in CD-11. Disapproval prevails throughout both congressional districts, with strong disapproval almost double of those who disapprove. This likely explains why voters are supportive of imposing reform from the outside, via the Article V convention process.
Methodology CD-8: A total of 1692 respondents participated in online interviews conducted September 18 - 20, 2018, among a representative sample of voters in Congressional District 8 in Michigan. The potential sampling error is plus or minus 1.9% at the 95% confidence level.
Methodology CD-11: A total of 1507 respondents participated in online interviews conducted September 18 - 20, 2018, among a representative sample of voters in Congressional District 11 in Michigan. The potential sampling error is plus or minus 1.82% at the 95% confidence level.
