The confirmation of Robert F. Kennedy, Jr., as Secretary of Health and Human Services signals a sea change in how the federal government will approach public health. The mantra: Make America Healthy Again.
As he pointed out in his confirmation hearing and to any and all who would listen during his own presidential campaign, Americans are at once the most medicated and least healthiest people in the developed world.
This is particularly true of American children. The increasing rate of childhood heart disease, obesity, and diabetes does not bode well for the future of the republic.
Kennedy has vowed to end the agency capture that pharmaceutical companies and medical insurance firms have enjoyed. This is the alliance that enriched executives and was seen in sharp relief just five years ago when Big Pharma and Big Government joined together to execute a most heinous violation of our civil liberties at the cost of the physical and mental well-being of millions of Americans, most notably a generation of children.
This is to say nothing of HHS initiatives that will begin to investigate the use of food dyes and other chemicals that have long been in our food supply. Kennedy's HHS will no doubt emphasize and encourage physical fitness for children as did the administration of his uncle, John F. Kennedy.
All of this -- and much more that Kennedy has planned -- is absolutely necessary, well, and good. Of course, the hope is that Kennedy and the administration will do so by keeping his own words about the Constitution in mind.
During a July 20, 2023, hearing of the U.S. House Select Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, Kennedy was discussing the dangers of censorship that occurred during the Fed-Pharma Covid lockdowns and said:
"Above all, we need to elevate the Constitution of the United States, which was written for hard times, and that has to be the premier compass for all of our activities."
For all that Kennedy and the administration can do to end agency capture and the malign influence of pharmaceutical companies who love a sickly populace and insurance companies who enjoy Americans paying more for health care than anyone else in the world, MAHA must begin at home.
The mission of Convention of States is "to build an engaged army of self-governing grassroots activists."
Self-governance is the key to a functioning republic. All of those involved with COS are applying it and emphasizing it in our quest to establish the guardrails that have become required to ensure that the federal government is prohibited from encroaching upon our civil liberties and abusing its power.
We must also apply it to our everyday lives.
Self-governance is not easy. It involves critical thinking and action in everything we do, whether that is something as involved as convincing our state legislatures to pass our COS resolution or passing up potato chips and pop in favor of a glass of water and a nice walk. It means raising an eyebrow and a question or two when a distracted or disinterested doctor simply writes a prescription for something that may be alleviated simply by a change in habit.
The example of self-governance is something that can be passed along and strengthens and enhances the future of the republic. As the great political philosopher Russell Kirk wrote, "Our civilization is an immense continuity and essence.” The question is which habits and traits will we bequeath to our heirs? Self-governance or lazy dependence upon the state and its partners? We have the power to not only save America for our children, but reaffirm it.
The executive branch as presently constituted can do much to change regulations and end the unholy -- and unhealthy -- alliance with corporate entities who have done us harm. It can do much to promote healthier lifestyles, diets, and physical fitness. But the hard work of changing our mindset and habits must be our own.
As Convention of States Action president and co-founder Mark Meckler wrote only last month, "In the end, it’s a very basic principle. You must play your part to ensure that you are healthy for your children and grandchildren. No one else can do it for you. That’s part of what it means to be self-governing."
Indeed. Self-governance is the essential trait. It must be exercised constantly in order that in our personal health and the health of the body politic we can once again become what every human being is meant to be from birth: free and independent.
