As a student of history and the Constitution, Lt. Col. Allen West understands the intentions of the Framers when they wrote our nation's founding document. They never intended for an elite political class that is continually reelected to the national government, Col. West explained in a recent interview. They wanted statesmen who would go to Washington, serve the people, and return to the populace.
Col. West pointed to a quote from George Mason, the man responsible for including the Convention of States option in Article V, who said,
"Nothing so greatly impels a man to regard the interests of his constituents than the certainty of returning to the general mass of the people."
Our federal politicians don't have that certainty. They believe they can live and work in Washington for the rest of their lives, and many, like the incoming president, do exactly that.
We need term limits, and Col. West believes a Convention of States is the only way we're going to get them.
"One way the people, through their state legislatures, can have an effect on what's happening in D.C. is Article V of the Constitution, which is a Convention of States," he said.
