Louisiana Convention of States Leaders and Volunteers Gather at the State Capitol in Baton Rouge

Published in Blog on May 15, 2022 by Van Warren Walter

COS Louisiana Advocacy Day, April 26, 2022, was a success. Thirty-five Convention of States Louisiana leaders and volunteers met at the capitol building in Baton Rouge.

In this year's session, the COS Louisiana team was on the ground to determine where legislators stand on local bills supported by the Convention of States. COS was also talking to the public about Article V of the U.S. Constitution. Several people signed the COS petition and took cards containing information on our grassroots movement.

The evening before the meeting, 14 team members met at our SGC's home to pack gift bags for the legislators. Included in the bags were a "bundtini" for dessert, a pocket Constitution, and a bookmark giving the number of COS petition signers in each legislator's district. The volunteers ate dinner together after they finished preparing the gift bags.

During the day, 30 legislators stopped by to visit with our team and find out more about the Convention of States. The representatives took the pulse on where we stand on the issues of the day.

Future Farmers of America stopped by and were given information on COS and Article V of the U.S. Constitution. One gentleman came to volunteer with COS and became our newest District Captain. That’s a success!

Afterward, team members were invited to dinner. Those of us who went to dinner had good food and a good time, and most importantly, got to know fellow team members better.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:

Thank you so much for your service to the people of our district.
