Lori Lightfoot loses reelection

Published in Blog on March 01, 2023 by Jakob Fay

Chicago’s Lori Lightfoot was ousted from office on Tuesday in an overwhelming referendum on the hellish condition of her crime-riddled city. The one-term mayor was edged out in her reelection race by Brandon Johnson and Paul Vallas, both of whom will advance to a runoff in April.

Since Lightfoot took office in 2019, Chicago’s crime rates have skyrocketed. The New York Times reported that: “Under Ms. Lightfoot… homicide rates soared to generational highs…. And residents throughout the city say they are unsettled by a spike in robberies, muggings, carjackings and other property crimes, and they have placed the blame on Ms. Lightfoot.” Her mismanagement of the situation not only tarnished her reputation within Chicago but also brought her national notoriety.

Lightfoot received a meager 16 percent of the vote in Tuesday’s election. None of her opponents hit the 50 percent threshold needed to win, thus triggering a runoff election.

In response to her crushing loss, Lightfoot laughably tweeted: “We’ve made significant progress building a safer, more equitable city. I thank each and every one of you for believing in me.”

Many have noted that the disgraced mayor’s defeat has broader implications outside Chicago. Throughout America, many large, liberal cities have suffered under soft-on-crime politicians, not unlike Lori Lightfoot. Billionaire George Soros has invested millions of dollars into their races. Lightfoot’s failed bid for reelection, however, joins mounting evidence that voters have grown wary of these policies and their disastrous results. As Convention of States previously reported, for example, San Francisco voted to recall its soft-on-crime District Attorney Chesa Boudin last November.

“Crime is the beneath-the-iceberg issue for voters in 2022,” said Mark Meckler, president of Convention of States, in advance of last year’s midterm, “it’s absolutely clear in these numbers. The new wave of pro-criminal, anti-justice policies in Democrat-led blue cities are impacting everyone, which is why [polling]… shows such a strong response when asking people how they feel about this specific policy.”

No doubt voters are waking up to the seriousness of saving our cities from devolving into violent, anarchic chaos. Lori Lightfoot’s ill-fated reelection bid is proof positive of this.

Unfortunately, many corrupt national factors keep influencing these critical races in cities where the populace is suffering under failed liberal crime policies. To join us in kicking the federal government back into its proper place, sign the Convention of States petition below.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
