The following was written by Convention of States President Mark Meckler!
Last Sunday, my good friend Mark Levin released an episode of his FOX News talk show, “Life, Liberty & Levin,” in which he mentioned his role in the Convention of States (COS) grassroots movement while running through his conservative bona fides. The newly sworn-in President Donald Trump reposted the show to Truth Social with the caption: “A MUST WATCH, THANK YOU MARK!”
The video explores Trump’s legacy as possibly “the most conservative president this entire century.” But let’s not underestimate the significance of the COS mention. The new administration bears the fingerprints of the COS grassroots, starring many of our most vocal supporters, and we can now confirm that Trump is also aware of COS.
“I’ve been involved as one of the leaders in the Convention of States movement with our friend Mark Meckler — over five million members,” Levin said during his show, featuring images of the COS logo and myself with Levin (I’ve been honored by Mark’s support and friendship for many years).
With momentum and public support rising for COS, there’s never been a better time for Trump to back the cause.
Here’s why:
1. Most pro-COS cabinet in history
Per Article V of the U.S. Constitution and the Founders’ plan for keeping the federal government in check, two-thirds of the states can call for a convention to propose constitutional amendments whenever they believe that the federal government has become too oppressive, powerful, or out-of-touch. Since 2013, we’ve been working with state legislatures to implement this plan to propose amendments targeting federal spending, overreach, and career politicians. During that time, we’ve secured close alliances with many of the patriots who now serve in Trump’s cabinet.
Pete Hegseth, Trump’s Defense Secretary, is one such ally.
“The leviathan of today's federal government continues to grow unabated, pushing the people further away from our Founder’s vision of self-governance,” my friend Secretary Hegseth stated in his COS endorsement. “The Convention of States Project is the only constitutional pathway for citizens to save our Republic by restoring it to her citizens. Article V of our Constitution underscores the duty of active citizenship and I am proud to stand with millions of volunteers in this effort.”
Watch Hegseth share about COS on Fox News below!
Additionally, Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and U.S. Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee have all signaled their support for COS, while Speaker of the House Mike Johnson advocated for our legislation as a Louisiana state representative in 2016 and hosted a congressional subcommittee hearing about Article V weeks before he rose to the speakership.
Trump has truly assembled the most pro-COS cabinet in history. Now, the nation calls upon him to help lead the charge.
2. Join with other great presidents
By supporting Convention of States, Trump would join the ranks of other great presidents who championed the Article V convention process, including George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, Abraham Lincoln, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Ronald Reagan.
In 1994, President Reagan argued that the nation couldn’t “depend on Congress to discipline itself” but must instead “rely on the states to force Congress to act. Fortunately, our Nation’s Founders gave us the means to amend the Constitution through action of state legislatures,” he added.
More than three decades later, we still haven’t followed Reagan’s advice. Perhaps we can finally change that during Trump’s second term!
3. A permanent legacy
But, perhaps the most compelling case for Trump to support COS is the lesson learned from the past four years: almost everything one president does can swiftly be undone by the next.
The past several decades of American politics have shown us that even presidents who seek to rein in the federal government ultimately fail to do so permanently. The administrative state is simply too powerful; it always comes roaring back.
During his first term, President Trump made good on many of his promises to restore power to the American people. But how many of those changes were quickly reversed under Biden? Modern presidential politics has devolved into an executive sparring match in which no one can make lasting progress.
We have full confidence in President Trump’s willingness to go to bat for the American people and make significant headway in the fight against federal tyranny. However, we want to ensure that, this time, the administrative state and establishment are defeated for good. If that seems too good to be true, remember that this is why the Founders gave us Article V — to combat an oppressive government and restore power to the “We the People.”
So, what do you say, Mr. President? Are you ready to make history?
