‘It’s Not Government’: Chris Pratt praises We the People for stepping up after Hurricane Helene

Published in Blog on October 04, 2024 by Jakob Fay

Award-winning actor Chris Pratt, who has been raising awareness about “Hurricane Helene’s devastating aftermath,” pointed out that it’s not up to the federal government but the American people to support each other in times of need.

“I think what makes this country great has always been the people in the community and the people who are willing to step up,” Pratt expressed. “It’s not up to other people. It’s up to us.”

“I’ll be making a donation on the side,” the “Guardians of the Galaxy” star said. “But to anybody out there watching this, $5 bucks, $10 bucks, anything you can do. And if you can’t, that’s okay… just let this be an inspiration to you that you can go out there. You can do something. There’s someone out there who needs help.”

“We are the fabric of this society,” he continued. “It’s not government. It’s us. We make this country great.”

“Today, November 5th, and November 6th, no matter what happens, it’s on us to be strong in our country. People showing up and putting boots on the ground.”

Chris Pratt is exactly right, of course. The Founders never meant for the American people to look to the government to save them. Instead, for hundreds of years, we turned to each other, our local churches, and private charities to respond to catastrophes like Hurricane Helene. As the government continued to grow, however, many of us resigned that responsibility to federal agencies and programs.

As the past few weeks have made abundantly clear, the government is not always capable of being our savior. In the end, it’s the everyday unsung heroes who step up to serve their communities that count. Thankfully, we have seen that the American spirit of benevolence is still alive and well, not to mention infinitely more effective than government aid.

Helene, which struck multiple states last week, left entire neighborhoods in ruins. At least 223 people have died, and the death toll is expected to continue to rise. Now is not the time to wait for the government to act but for We the People to console, support, and pray for our fellow citizens.

It’s not the government. It’s us. It’s everyday patriots like you and me. We can make a difference for our brothers and sisters in the Southeast. It’s up to us to respond.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
