Is the Constitution undemocratic, sexist, and racist?

Published in Blog on September 12, 2019 by Article V Patriot

The Constitution has been under attack for many years, but the pressure has increased in the last few months as certain members of Congress lament our founding document's alleged critical flaws.

Opponents to the Constitution claim that because the document was written by white slave-holding men, the product of their work is necessarily sexist, racist, and undemocratic. The Constitution represents our country's worst flaws, and these critics celebrate each time the Supreme Court amends our founding document from the bench.

These attacks are ridiculous on their face, but not just because the Constitution has existed for over 200 years and governed the rise of the wealthiest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

As Prof. Rob Natelson explained in a recent article, critics of the Constitution lack a basic knowledge of founding-era history. Here's an excerpt:

Another common claim is that the Constitution is sexist because it allegedly discriminates against women and was adopted only by men. But that claim is substantially false. Nothing in the document discriminates against women. The drafting convention of 1787 deliberately composed it in a gender-neutral way, foreseeing that women eventually would participate more fully in national politics. Some of the Constitution’s opponents criticized this, but the framers’ foresight proved accurate when an amendment protecting female suffrage was added to the Constitution in 1919.

Nor is it factual to say that the Constitution was adopted only by men. It’s true that when the document was ratified, most states didn’t allow women to vote. But women participated actively in the public debate over ratification. They also composed a significant portion of the New Jersey electorate, which supported the Constitution overwhelmingly. There are fragmentary records of women voting in other locations as well.

The ideas in the Constitution don't need to be changed, but they do need to be restored. For the last 100 years, the principles that have made our nation great have been slowly eroded by activist Supreme Court justices. They've gradually expanded the power of the federal government and stripped power away from the people and the states.

That's why an Article V Convention of States is so necessary. A Convention of States can propose constitutional amendments that limit the power and jurisdiction of the federal government, mandate fiscal responsibility, and impose term limits on federal officials. With this complete package of amendments in place, the Founders' original vision will once again take precedent over those who seek to change our nation for the worse.

The Constitution isn't racist, sexist, or undemocratic. It describes a federalist republic that allows the people to govern themselves however they see fit. With a Convention of States, we can restore that principle as the bedrock of our system of government.

Petition your state legislator

Almost everyone knows that our federal government is on a dangerous course. The unsustainable debt combined with crushing regulations on states and businesses is a recipe for disaster.

What is less known is that the Founders gave state legislatures the power to act as a final check on abuses of power by Washington, DC. Article V of the U.S. Constitution authorizes the state legislatures to call a convention to proposing needed amendments to the Constitution. This process does not require the consent of the federal government in Washington DC.

I support Convention of States; a national movement to call a convention under Article V of the United States Constitution, restricted to proposing amendments that will impose fiscal restraints on the federal government, limit its power and jurisdiction, and impose term limits on its officials and members of Congress.

I want our state to be one of the necessary 34 states to pass a resolution calling for this kind of an Article V convention. You can find a copy of the model resolution and the Article V Pocket Guide (which explains the process and answers many questions) here: https://conventionofstates.com/handbook_pdf

I ask that you support Convention of States and consider becoming a co-sponsor. Please respond to my request by informing the national COS team of your position, or sending them any questions you may have:
