The Convention of States movement is gaining momentum across the country, and the media is beginning to take notice.
In a full article and video interview, Just the News outlines how a Convention of States can address the overreach and overspending coming out of Washington.
This week, the U.S. national debt hit $28 trillion. D.C. politicians are preparing to bring back congressional earmarks. And the Senate is soon to vote on a $1.9 trillion coronavirus stimulus package that critics complain offers more pork, pet projects and political payoffs than it does direct relief from the economic ravages wrought by the pandemic.
Amid exploding debt and the expansion and concentration of political power in Washington, a grassroots movement led by an organization called Convention of States Action is working to bypass Congress and empower the states to rein in federal power and spending directly through the constitutional amendment process.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states when 34 states pass a resolution calling for one. At this Convention, states can propose constitutional amendments, which must then be ratified by 38 states following the Convention.
Here's how a Convention of States can address each of the problems Just the News lists.
- $28 trillion national debt: A Convention of States can propose amendments that force the federal government to be fiscally responsible and lower the debt. These could include a balanced budget amendment along with amendments that cap taxes and cut spending.
- Congressional earmarks: A Convention of States can propose amendments that limit Congress' power and ability to spend. These could include limitations on or outright bans of earmark spending.
- Pork, pet projects, and political payoffs: Corruption will always be a part of politics, but a Convention of States limit the power and authority of corrupt politicians. Amendments proposed can restrict Washington's jurisdiction to only a narrowly tailored set of topics. This can get the federal government out of education, the environment, energy, and a host of other topics.
It's obvious why the Convention of States Project is getting so much attention. It's our most powerful tool to limit Washington's power and put the federal government back in its constitutional box.
