Senator Rick Santorum very well may be America’s last surviving statesman to have served in the upper halls of federal power. After having followed politics for decades, served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the Senate, and run for president twice, the Pennsylvania native has accumulated a wealth of political acumen and insight.
In the past, Santorum has said he cannot quit politics due to the guilt he carries for not preventing America’s decline on his watch. Now, he is motivated by a desire to fix what is broken.
“I spent 16 years in Congress, ran for president twice, have been on most major news networks in this country, commentating on what’s going on in Washington and observing, very closely, what’s happening in the city,” he recounted in a speech earlier this year. “I fought a lot of battles.… But, in the end, I failed.”
“I failed,” he continued, “because this country is a lot worse off than when I started forty years ago…. Our country is more divided. When I got involved in politics, I think our deficit was two trillion dollars; it’s now 34 trillion dollars, and we’re adding one to two trillion dollars every year. And there’s no end in sight…. Our country cannot be sustained doing that.”
But having tried his hand at multiple political projects — serving in Congress, writing books, even running his own conservative film company — it seemed that nothing he tried was working. Until he discovered Convention of States.
“Ladies and gentlemen, I’m pleading with you,” he said in a must-watch speech at the recent 2024 Family Leadership Summit. “I think this is America’s last best hope. It is the one the Founders gave us for such a time as this. And if we don’t use it, we will be that generation that not only lost America but were too cowardly to take up the cudgel to save it.”
