Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee has been a longtime supporter of the Convention of States Project, and he recently took the opportunity on his show to explain why he still supports the Founders' tool to limit federal power.
"A Convention of States as it has been planned can be one of the best things that happens," he said.
As Governor Huckabee outlined, a Convention of States allows the grassroots to enact the kind of constitutional changes that Congress never will.
"Washington is in gridlock. If we ever want things like a balanced budget amendment or term limits--both of which I really believe would help this country--we'll never get it out of Congress," he said. "They'll never vote to limit themselves to a certain number of terms, and they'll never vote to have to balance the budget."
Here's what Gov. Huckabee said when he endorsed the Convention of States Project back in 2017:
“The Framers gave us a structure to allow the states to unilaterally impose proper controls on the federal government when it overruns the boundaries they had established. Article V allows for a Convention of States for this very purpose. The states can meet in official session to draft amendments to the Constitution that require fiscal restraint and other limitations on federal power... I have reviewed their plan and it is both innovative and realistic.
I urge you to join me in supporting the Convention of States Project with Citizens for Self-Governance.”
