The world is watching Ukraine as Russian troops descend on the eastern European country. It's unclear how the situation will resolve, but many agree that it's the most serious threat to peace in Europe in a long time.
Meanwhile, many Americans have expressed serious doubt that the Biden administration and the federal government as a whole can effectively address Vladimir Putin's advances. The president bragged in 2020 that he could go "toe-to-toe" with Putin, but nothing he's done has slowed the Russian advance.
Vladimir Putin doesn’t want me to be President. He doesn’t want me to be our nominee. If you’re wondering why — it’s because I’m the only person in this field who’s ever gone toe-to-toe with him.
— Joe Biden (@JoeBiden) February 21, 2020
Biden is obviously in over his head. A better president may well have handled this situation more competently, and we should work in 2024 to elect a president who can address these kinds of situations.
But our country is facing a deeper, more persistent problem that we can't fix with the next election. Federal tyranny is destabilizing our country and making it more difficult for us to come together and address the problems we need to address. This can include foreign threats as well as domestic issues that affect different states in different ways.
Overreaching policies and mandates from the federal government terrify Americans from whichever policy doesn't control Washington. When Democrats are in charge, Republicans worry they'll impose nationwide policies that don't adhere to their values. When Republicans are in charge, Democrats worry about the same thing.
The threat of federal tyranny sows distrust of fellow Americans and turns every election into a high-stakes, winner-take-all affair. This is exactly what our enemies want. They want us preoccupied with the federal government so we ignore the real problems in our communities as well as the potential threats abroad.
The solution? Decentralize power away from Washington. Reduce the power, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government and re-empower We the People to take charge of our country's future.
The best way to do that is by calling the first-ever Article V Convention of States. A Convention of States has the power to propose constitutional amendments that effectively and permanently limit Washington's power and return that power where it belongs: with the states and the people.
With the threat of tyranny abated at home, we can more effectively address tyranny abroad if doing so is in our national interest.
