The homeschooling movement in the 1980s and 90s was one of the most successful grassroots movements in the history of our country. Led in part by Convention of States co-founder Mike Farris, organizations like the Home School Legal Defense Association helped passed legislation guaranteeing the rights of parents to educate their children as they saw fit.
In a similar way, the Convention of States Project is seeking to harness the power of We the People to bring power home -- to allow families, states, and local communities the freedom to make decisions for themselves.
Understanding the kinship between the two movements, homeschooling champion and author Heidi St. John hosted Convention of States Action President Mark Meckler on her podcast recently.
They discussed many topics, but one overarching theme stood out: just like homeschoolers didn't sit on the sidelines and hope for the best, so too patriotic Americans can't assume our constitutional republic will survive federal overreach.
"We're seeing our freedoms erode right out from underneath us because we haven't been involved," St. John said. "We've left it up to other people. And what we're realizing is that if we want to keep our nation free to give to our grandchildren what we got, we can't just sit on the sidelines any more."
