As a grassroots leader, do you struggle with strategies and ideas for keeping activists alert, engaged, and inspired during calls and in written communications?
COS Florida state director Denah Butts will help you out. Denah is the special guest on the February edition of the "Grassroots Groundbreakers" podcast, which is entitled "Great Communication and Team Calls" and available here.
Host and Convention of States Action chief grassroots officer Mike Ruthenberg talks with Denah about the strategies she has implemented for effective communications in general -- and team calls in particular -- to make Florida's COS volunteer activists some of the most vibrant and successful in the country.
Denah discusses what kinds of meetings and calls are organized in communications, training, and leadership, in addition to a monthly town hall meeting to educate fellow citizens about COS and the Article V process. She stresses the importance of leaders listening to members of the team and acting upon what they need, and the form and function of meetings -- including the use of music in calls and an intriguing take on the value of silence in generating ideas.
She also shares best practices in making email communication unique, attractive, and personal to grab and retain attention.
Denah served COS Florida in various communications roles before becoming state director in July 2021. The team has supported F3 and 34|Ready legislation initiatives in Tallahassee, and in 2024, Florida led the nation in event participation. Denah was awarded a Challenge Coin at the 2022 leadership summit in Orlando.
"Grassroots Groundbreakers" airs every third Friday of the month, and this discussion with Denah, one of the best communicators in all of COS, is yet another invaluable and inspiring episode in the series You can access this important conversation and all of the previous "Grassroots Groundbreakers" programs via this link.
