Earmark spending hasn't gone away. According to a report from earlier this year, Congress is still trying to resurrect the corrupt practice that led to jail time for some lawmakers in the early 2000's.
"With House Democrats eyeing a return to earmarking their chamber’s appropriations and possibly other bills, the quiet campaigns on and off the Hill are slowly emerging," Roll Call reports.
These efforts aren't new. Former Senator Tom Coburn lambasted Congress for this same thing two years ago -- his words are still as true today as they were then.
Congress will never end wasteful, corrupt spending. Even when they make the right decision to (mostly) eliminate pork barrel spending (aka, "earmarks"), they try ten years later to bring it back.
We need a permanent solution, and we can get one with an Article V Convention of States.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states, and has the power to propose amendments to the U.S. Constitution. These amendments can enshrine fiscal responsibility in our founding document and, if ratified by 38 states, save the financial futures of our children and grandchildren.
