Federal programs designed to "transfer income" are projected to hit record levels in fiscal year 2020, according to a new report.
CNS News took a look at projections published by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) and discovered that our country is about to spend a whopping $3.22 trillion next year on programs "designed to transfer income ... to individuals or families."
These so-called "payments for individuals" (as the OMB calls them) are projected to account for 67.9% of all federal spending this fiscal year and consume 14.4% of the nation's gross domestic product.
[By contrast,] In 1940, the federal government spent only 2.1% of GDP on "payments for individuals."
These programs include a wide variety of government initiatives, including those that help pay for medical bills, food stamps, and retirement.
Not all of these programs deserve to be scrapped, of course. Some are more worthy of taxpayer funding than others, and a detailed analysis is beyond the scope of the OMB's report.
But this report does paint a picture of a national dependent on the federal government. When nearly 15 percent of our nation's GDP and 68 percent of all federal spending is dedicated to writing checks for individual citizens, we know we have a self-governance problem.
For decades, Washington, D.C., has worked tirelessly to invade the private lives of citizens and families. They know that the best way to make us dependent on federal bureaucrats is via our pocketbooks, and now many Americans can't imagine living without federal agencies.
We need to get back to independent self-governance. Our country was built by men and women dedicated to caring for themselves, their families, their communities, and their states. They didn't look to Washington for support, and they certainly didn't want non-elected bureaucrats to decide their financial future.
Washington will never release its grip on American citizens. That's why the Founders included the Convention of States option in Article V of the Constitution.
A Convention of States is called and controlled by the states and has the power to propose constitutional amendments. These amendments -- once ratified by 38 states -- have the power to reduce the size, scope, and jurisdiction of the federal government, freeing the American people to live their lives without constant input from Washington.
Millions have voiced their support and 15 states are on board. Sign the Petition below to add your name to the list!
