America’s interest payments topped $475 billion in fiscal year 2022, an issue coming from borrowing rates climbing as a result of inflation.
Because we tend to forget just how much money that truly is, it's worth noting that the government spent less on veterans’ benefits and transportation combined than on our indebted interest payments.
The federal government spent $353 billion last year, meaning the rise is huge. If the growth stays on track, federal interest payments may pass the Department of Defense's $750 billion budget in the next four years, reports CNN.
The Treasury Department released its overview of fiscal year 2022, featuring a chart of its expenditures by category. As seen in the diagram, net interest is an expense higher than several categories. It falls not too far behind the costs of the entire Department of Education.
If the predictions of surpassing America's national defense ring true by 2025 or 2026, debt interest will become one of the highest payments America makes to the rest of the world.
Financially America is drowning underwater.
Politicans have decided they care more about instantaneous funds than financial responsibility. This flawed mentality won't go without punishment down the road.
Our national debt stands above $31 trillion, which is 100% higher than the national GDP.
The report doesn't detail which countries our interest payments were directed towards, but it's safe to say a large portion when to China.
Still, the Washington elite advocate for funding, whether it's for Ukraine, other foreign nations, or simply useless projects. The funds our government distributes are passed with complete recklessness.
Politicians work in Washington with a short-sighted view of America's future. It's long-term, disciplined thinking that once made the U.S. such a strong and powerful nation.
Imagine owing $475 billion, let alone in just interest payments. We can't think for one second that each member of Congress runs their individual office the way they operate the government.
They will budget their office and personal finances, they just won't budget the government's spending.
It's time we do it for them. Creating a federally balanced budget will ensure this chaos can't continue. By calling for a Convention of States, we can make this change to the broken government system.
Next week's elections are a start, but it's going to take even more accountability to put them back in their place.
If you've just learned about the Convention of States movement, we invite you to learn more on our website and sign the petition below so your representatives know you want power restraints on Washington.
